Yiwu Sourcing Guide: Process, Pricing & Inspection

Last updated: August 14, 2026

Yiwu, a city two hours south of Shanghai by high-speed rail, hosts the world’s largest wholesale market for small commodities. More than 70,000 booths trade everything from toys and jewelry to hardware, textiles and seasonal goods, and buyers from over 200 countries source here every year. This guide explains how sourcing from Yiwu actually works — the market layout, minimum order practice, sampling, inspection and shipping — and how Jabbar Sourcing Team, the international sourcing team of Zhejiang Haoduobao Brand Management Co., Ltd. (founded in 2008, serving overseas buyers through this team since 2021), manages the whole chain for you with a 300+ person company, a 50,000 m² warehouse and shipments to 100+ countries and regions.

How the Yiwu market is organized

The core of Yiwu is the Yiwu International Trade City (also called Futian Market), a complex of five connected districts, each specializing in broad categories. As a rough orientation: District 1 concentrates toys, artificial flowers and jewelry; District 2 covers hardware, tools, electrical items and luggage; District 3 focuses on stationery, sports and office supplies; District 4 is strong in daily necessities, socks, textiles and shoes; District 5 gathers imported goods, bedding and auto accessories. Around the trade city there are also specialized streets and production-area markets for categories like packaging and accessories.

Walking the market yourself is a great experience — many of our clients visit us in Yiwu and we accompany them booth by booth — but it is not required. Share photos, links or specifications through our inquiry form and we walk the market for you, comparing booths on price, quality consistency and export experience before shortlisting suppliers.

MOQ practice: how small can you start?

Minimum order quantities in Yiwu are famously flexible compared with factory-direct sourcing. Many booths sell by the carton rather than by the production run, which typically means a few hundred pieces per SKU for small commodities — and often less for higher-value items. This is why Yiwu is ideal for mixed-container buyers: instead of committing to one factory’s MOQ, you can combine dozens of SKUs from different booths into a single shipment.

Our own thresholds reflect that flexibility: first cooperation supports trial orders from USD 1,000, regular orders start from USD 3,000 and support mixed-category wholesale, and consolidated container orders start from USD 10,000. We do not provide one-piece dropshipping — our model is wholesale sourcing, consolidation and FCL/LCL shipping.

Samples and pre-production confirmation

For catalog items, booths normally provide samples quickly — sometimes free for small items with the buyer covering courier cost, sometimes at sample price refundable against the order; the exact terms vary by booth and product value, and we confirm them for you before anything is paid. For customized goods (printed logos, packaging changes, modified specifications), a pre-production sample with photos and video is the safe path, and we hold production until you confirm it.

A practical tip: keep a written specification for every SKU — material, size, weight, color code, packaging and labeling. We turn your requirements into a bilingual specification the supplier signs off on, which becomes the standard our inspectors check against later.

The sourcing process, step by step

1. Send requirements. Share your product, quantity, target market and budget through the inquiry form or WhatsApp. Reference links or photos help us match faster.

2. Match suppliers. We screen Yiwu suppliers and prepare quotation lists. You receive a complete quotation within 24–48 hours; for complex multi-SKU projects we confirm requirements within 24 hours first. Every quote itemizes product, inspection, warehousing, packing and logistics costs — we do not add a separate buyer commission.

3. Confirm and order. Once prices and specifications are agreed, we place orders with each supplier and track production and delivery into our warehouse. Payment methods: T/T bank transfer to a USD account, Alipay, and Alibaba.com Pay.

4. Inspect goods. A dedicated specialist follows the order, opens cartons and packages one by one, and sends photos and videos in real time for your confirmation before packing.

5. Warehouse, consolidate and ship. Goods from all suppliers gather in our Yiwu warehouse, are consolidated and loaded, and we keep you updated until arrival.

Quality inspection: what we actually check

Every order is inspected before it ships. The inspection standard comes from your confirmed specification, and the typical checklist covers: quantity per SKU against the order; visual appearance and workmanship on sampled units; material, size and weight against the specification; function tests where applicable (electronics powered on, moving parts cycled); packaging integrity, labeling and carton markings; and export compliance basics for the destination market.

You see the evidence, not just a report: your specialist photographs and films the opened cartons and waits for your confirmation before packing. Problems found at this stage are resolved with the supplier — replacement, rework or refund — before the goods enter consolidation, which is far cheaper than discovering issues after arrival.

Consolidation, containers and transit times

Goods from different suppliers are consolidated in our warehouse and loaded together. As a planning rule of thumb we fill a 20GP with about 28 CBM, a 40GP with about 58 CBM and a 40HQ with about 68 CBM, keeping roughly a 5% reserve for safe loading. To estimate your own shipment, try the container load calculator.

Ocean transit times vary by destination and routing; as broad reference ranges from Ningbo/Shanghai (the ports serving Yiwu): Southeast Asia roughly 1–2 weeks, the Middle East and South Asia roughly 3–4 weeks, Europe roughly 4–5 weeks, North America roughly 2–4 weeks depending on coast, and South America or Africa roughly 4–6 weeks. Add inland time at both ends, and treat peak seasons (before Chinese New Year, and August–October) as slower and more expensive — booking early matters. We arrange the freight, documents and tracking, and keep you informed until delivery.

Five common mistakes first-time buyers make

Choosing on price alone. Two booths can quote the same item with different material grades; the cheaper one often costs more after returns. We compare quality consistency, not just price.

Skipping the written specification. Verbal agreements do not survive translation or time. Every SKU we order carries a signed bilingual specification.

No inspection before shipping. Once a container sails, fixing problems costs multiples. Inspection before consolidation is the single highest-value step in the chain.

Underestimating volume. Freight is priced by volume for most small commodities. Measure carton CBM early — the CBM tool exists for exactly this.

Ignoring destination rules. Labeling, certification and packaging requirements differ by market. Tell us your destination country up front and we flag what applies.
